Computational & Observational Astronomy Lab is a Research Lab established by Khan Asad. It is part of the Department of Physical Sciences at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Since its establishment in 2020 until Nov 2023, the lab was called Astronomy Research Group, IUB (ARGI) and did not have any formal status. It has been officially initiated as COALab since Dec 2023.
The lab is primarily used for research but also conducts undergraduate labs and outreach activities. The research is carried out by Khan Asad and his postbac research assistant(s) in collaboration with astronomers in the Middle East, Europe and South Africa. The lab has garnered a total fund of 2.6 million BDT since 2021 from the Government of Bangladesh and IUB.

Khan Asad is an astronomer and assistant professor and the founding director of COALab. He did a PhD in radio astronomy from Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, University of Groningen, The Netherlands and a postdoc at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory before joining IUB in Jan 2020.
His research focusses on 21-cm cosmology, clusters of galaxies, radio astronomy antennas and machine learning in astronomy. Aside from research, he teaches courses on astronomy and astrophysics and conduct outreach activities for the general public.
